| I
joined the Herts Sports Village in July 2003, 13months prior
to the 2004 Paralympics. The intention was to use the excellent
training facilities in my preparation for Athens. After 17years
of training and competition behind me, and past medal success,
Athens was always going to be my best opportunity for a Paralympic
medal. With hindsight, finishing in 4th place remains painful,
tantalisingly close to success, and bitterly disappointing.
However,
I will forever know that I could not have prepared any better
for Athens, and this is the first career disappointment that
I can resolve in a very logical rather than philosophical
manner. Training in those final months of my international
career extended far beyond the normal run-of the-mill skill
practices; far more important was 'body-maintenance' despite
the increasing demands I placed on it. Body Balance became
an integral aspect of my preparations.
At
EIS Hatfield, I was surrounded by people who shared a real
and common interest in ensuring I got to Athens in such a
well-prepared state. Nicki Combarro was the person with whom
I had the greatest contact. Her constant attention to the
parts of my body that were taking the greatest impact became
crucial, as I demanded greater levels of performance of it.
Nicki also made sure that she kept a general overview of my
training programme, involving doctors and physical fitness
instructors, and in doing so created a very open dialogue
about my training practices and schedule. I have no doubt
that without this general involvement of people, and Nicki's
personal intervention, that I would not have made it to Athens
in such good shape.
I
guess my biggest gratitude to Nicki was that she treated me
holistically, and in every way as an athlete. Her awareness
and openness of my 'severe physical disability' were also
important, as she always started from the point that I was
an athlete with 'athlete injuries and problems' accentuated
or affected by my disability. This binary approach, and joint
understanding between us, ensured that my treatment alongside
my training were so effective. It is a therapeutic/training
model I have learned from and recommend to athletes.
